When Ben and I first started dating, I put on Frank Herbert’s DUNE (the SyFy miniseries) as I’d really loved it—despite some obvious flaws—and wanted to share it with him. About fifteen minutes in, we gave up on it because I realized how truly awful the “Planet of the Hats” motif was, and how distracting it was from the overall story.
