When I was a boy scout I would go camping at Camp Bashore in the Appalachians and saw the night sky there. It is black even though it is filled with stars, and i mean filled with them.
It was the same when we stayed at Sea Ranch on the Northern California coast back in 1993. It was so dark in the guest house at night (with the blinds open and all the lights off) you could not see your hand in front of your face.
