We're Screwed

We realized the other day that since we live in a community property state, if anything happens to either one of us, the surviving spouse would become responsible for the deceased's debts. That's not a big deal for Ben as I don't have that much of a debt burden, but Ben's student loans would bury me – literally…and then they still wouldn't get paid!

We were thinking of moving after I retire, but since I'm not sure either of us would want to deal with winters in the blue northeast, that basically leaves Colorado or Oregon out west.

  1. Just a reminder: Thanks to global warming, the northeast isn't nearly as cold as it used to be.???

  2. I lived in Denver for 13 years. While very beautiful, it's gotten very crowded, hotter, and more fires.

Oregon is getting hotter, too, causing fires as well. But ya gotta not mind rain when you're tired of it because it will just keep coming. And right now, downtown sucks.

    1. We lived in Denver for four years (maybe you haven't dug that far back in here). My biggest complaint was the drivers. Also snow on Mother's Day, but don't get me started on that.

  3. Has he reapplied for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program? If not, he should do so ASAP before the rules switch back in early October of this year. Even if he doesn't qualify for full forgiveness now, it'll help correct the record to count his time and payments under the previous regime so he'll be that much further along to qualify. As a Gen Xer I thought I'd be paying until I retired because I had the wrong loans, but I managed to get rid of the last chunk under the temporary emergency rules that are in place until October.
