Sammy
May 5, 2009 – December 14, 2024
Sammy entered our life on May 3rd, 2014 via The Dumb Friends League in Denver. He wasn't our first choice; the staff warned that the doggo who brought us into the shelter was a handful and required 24/7 supervision. After hearing the details Ben and I agreed that we couldn't provide the level of care the boy needed and asked who else they had available. They suggested Sammy, and brought him in.
It was love at first sight, and Sammy came home with us that afternoon.
We don't know his history with any degree of certainty before he became a member of our family, but I do seem to remember being told that he was voluntarily surrendered by an older gentleman who couldn't keep up with or care for him. He was a little skittish at first—not really sure of what was going on—but he soon warmed to us and became integral to our lives.
While he loved us both, over the years I very much became his human, and later in life he was always by my side (or at least at my feet) whenever he could be. Sometimes I swore he was trying trip me so I'd fall and end end up being home with him all the time.
But these past few weeks have been difficult. He developed a horrible honking cough last month that became chronic. While there was no direct x-ray confirmation, based on his symptoms the vet strongly suspected a collapsing trachea (a pretty common malady for small breeds) and coupled with his age and the fact that no evidence of anything else was ever spotted it was the diagnosis we ran with. While the collapsing trachea could not be cured, we nevertheless tried various ways to lessen the symptoms; the only thing finally bringing some brief relief was a combination of Trazadone, Gabapentin, and Hydrocodone. The coughing was generally controlled on this regimen, but he still had breakout periods (usually happening at 2-3 am) that were horrific. The downside of this drug cocktail was that for a pup who was so full or energy and vigor up until this time, he was either sleeping all the time or so out of it when he was awake that his quality of life was non-existent—and that was no way to live. As much as we were reluctant to let him go, after one final trip to the vet last week, Ben and I talked it over and decided it was time to let him cross The Rainbow Bridge.
To that end, we contacted Angel Veterinary, who came to the house today, and while I was holding him, lovingly helped him on his journey. Ben and I are both devastated, but we know he'll come back to us in a new body when he's good and ready—and if he misses us half as much as we're missing him now, that won't be long.
Godspeed, Sammy.
My Latest Obsession
Following up on my previous post on this topic, it was indeed a very rough start getting back into Minidisc. The deck that I bought as "fully functional" immediately started throwing C13 Error messages once I started using it. I tried various non-invasive fixes found online, but none of them worked. I was heartbroken because the seller had specified "no returns accepted" in the auction, but more disappointed that my hopes for getting back into this fun format were dashed. Yeah, I still had the portable coming, but previous experience with that model told me that recording on it was a pain in the ass—hence the reason I also wanted a full-size deck (now and back in the day).
I resolved to simply put the machine back up on eBay as "for parts only" and see if I could at least recoup a little bit of what I paid for it.
By pure chance, the seller reached out to me shortly after I decided to resell it and asked how everything was going. I told her about the C13 Error and she seemed genuinely surprised.
That is truly disappointing… It was thoroughly tested before listing is with no errors or issues and it never spit a MiniDisc back out…I try to package things as safely as possible… There was no shipping or box damage? I'm wondering if something got discombobulated during shipment… Regardless, I always provide excellent service… The best I can do is issue you a full 100% refund upon return of the item…Just let me know how you would like to proceed…I'm sorry for the unforeseen inconvenience…
I responded, "There was no shipping damage, and it was packed exceedingly well! It appears the disc is not spinning once inserted (I don't hear anything going on once the disc goes in), so the table of contents on the disc can't be read. 😞 I'd like a refund. I have your original box, so I'll pack it up and get it shipped out to you later this week. Thank you."
I boxed it up and shipped it out. This past Monday I received this reponse:
Was able to inspect the player after work today… Something had to have happened during transport…I had a hunch since it was tested to the best of my abilities before it was listed…There was a couple of free floating broken plastic pieces inside the housing and a spring missing from the MiniDisc unit…unable to locate the spring anywhere… Regardless, a refund will be issued as promised… I appreciate your patience…It will take about 48 hours to process…I have to transfer $ and it takes 1-2 days for processing… Please feel free to contact me and I will respond as promptly as possible… Thanks again…
Proving that sometimes the Universe does have a sense of justice (or maybe just pure serendipity) the next day another JE480 appeared on eBay. This one had been serviced, and while it wasn't strictly "new old stock," it came with all the original accessories (still bagged) and the original box, making it about as close to NOS as I was ever likely to see.
Throwing financial caution to the wind (but knowing I'd get reimbursed—supposedly—by the buyer for the other one) I smashed that "Buy It Now" button in a heartbeat. It arrived Monday, and while there is a big scratch on the side of the case that the seller failed to document in his photos, it's in near mint condition otherwise. And it works. The most important thing, it works!

Dear Friends and Bloggers,
As some of you know and some may not know, this year has been extremely difficult for me to comprehend. I also know that I am not alone with this disruption in our lives that caught so many of us off guard and feeling desolate and depressed. What I offer is my personal opinion of the outcome of the election, its aftermath and my acceptance of the results. It does not come easily to say I took such a downturn during the campaign and the election that I sought medical help that precipitated some changes in the meds and a period of being alone, away from my family and friends to do some deep thinking of life and a way forward. I am still a work in progress but I am making progress. At the clinic, my doctor shared with me that there has been an increase in patients seeking help for mental issues as a result of our election, so know that you are not alone in this and together we may find a way forward to right the devastating wrong that has been inflicted upon us.
Thinking through the events of this past year. I realize that my anger is justified and my belief in the goodness of such a large percentage of our population was totally misplaced. After all the evidence dealing with the deceitful, bigoted, misogynistic and careless behavior and disregard for most of the people in this country came to light and was reported extensively, how the Republican/Maga candidate for our top office still was able to win, not just once but twice is astounding and mysterious. The bottom line – mean spirited and hateful people vote for mean spirited and hateful candidates. This was made abundantly clear on November 5th, this is part of our history now and my hope is that the authors that pen America's story will report what transpired and that it will not be able to be silenced and whitewashed. Which leads me to consider this important fact; the reasons for America's involvement in World War II and the allied forces that believed in the concept of a democracy united to end the ruthless takeover of the world by a handful of dangerous demagogues, was scrupulously chronicled in thousands of texts, yet her we are again witnessing a group of power-hungry billionaires intent on damaging our way of life, and it is certain to affect all of us in some way.
America has become a nation of a miniscule group of sadists(those desiring to inflict pain and suffering for their pleasure) and a large population of masochists(those deriving pleasure from oppression and being beaten down and disadvantaged). Consider the people of the Southern United States, people who vote for the Republican ticket time and time again, and rarely benefit from the decisions their representatives in Congress make for them. They remain in poverty, being the citizens who use most of the aid from the government, with the least of educational benefits and poorest economies in the nation.
I think we can all agree that these next 4 years are going to be a challenge, but I actually hope for the worst. I want the next president to surround himself with the dumbest and least experienced people he can find, and it looks like he's doing an excellent job making that happen. I want them to enact all kinds of laws that will further impoverish and inconvenience the middle and lower class. That may sound harsh but at the end of my life approaching fast I have little to lose as a senior on a fixed income. A reality check and a kick in the pants is what's needed for our younger generations to know that they've been coddled and babied and now's the time to feel true pain. I want the threatened tariffs to wreck the economy and send even the monied few into a tailspin of desperation. The common people need to live life with gas at $12.00 a gallon, compact cars selling for $80,000.00, eggs at $16.00 and mandatory insurance for home and car that will cost what no one can afford. The abject severity should open the eyes of the blind, deaf and stupid that voted for this most miserable excuse for a human being.
The turnaround won't happen soon. It will take an uprising of unfathomable determination unseen since WWII to begin the reparations needed for our fragile democracy to survive. I hope for that, seems hope is all we have at this minute. As a meme I saw recently said, if we can eat one billionaire, the others will fall in line. Possibly not, but it would be fun to witness the reaction. Thank you very much for your time. All of you inspire me every day with the work you do on your blogs. ~ Milleson

Moments After Which There Is No Going Back
From The Atheist Revolution:
What is it about the 2024 U.S. presidential election that I'm still having a hard time coming to terms with? It isn't the outcome itself, as that did not surprise me. I figured that Trump would win. It was clear that the news media missed him and wanted him back in office. The surprise had more to do with how he won. This wasn't another case of wining the electoral college and losing the popular vote. He won both.
What does it mean to win the popular vote even when it does not determine the outcome of an election? It means that more of the Americans who bothered to vote preferred the winner of the popular vote. It is, in essence, a popularity contest. And Trump won it. This is the part I'm struggling with the most. Knowing everything we now know about him, more American voters wanted Trump back in power. It is tough to look at the country in the same way I once did.
Same, Sir. Same.
