Some Bits From DNC Night Two

I'm so glad we went from "when they go low, we go high" to "girl, hold my earrings while I drag this weird MF." ~ Angry Staffer

Michelle Obama has been holding this back since Inauguration Day 2017

Former first lady Michelle Obama, who has been mostly absent from the political spotlight since leaving the White House, told Democrats that "hope is making a comeback."

She took the stage to huge applause.

"Something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn't it?" she said. "We're feeling it here in this arena, but it's spreading all across this country we love. A familiar feeling that's been buried too deep for too long. You know what I'm talking about? It's the contagious power of hope!"

Obama has spoken at every convention since 2008, when her husband was first nominated. Eight years later, she delivered her memorable line, "When they go low, we go high." In her 2020 speech, she said then-President Trump "is clearly in over his head" and "cannot meet this moment."

On Tuesday, she sought to contrast Harris and Trump throughout her speech, while only mentioning the former president by name once.

"Kamala has shown her allegiance to this nation, not by spewing anger and bitterness, but by living a life of service and always pushing the doors of opportunity open to others, she understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward," Obama said.

She touted Harris "as more than ready for this moment," calling her "one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency."

But she also warned Democrats about becoming complacent, urging the party to remain united and saying they still have work to do to win in November.

"No matter how good we feel tonight or tomorrow or the next day, this is still going to be an uphill battle, so we cannot be our own worst enemies. No, the minute something goes wrong, the minute a lie takes hold, we cannot start wringing our hands," Obama said. "We cannot get a Goldilocks complex about whether everything is just right. We cannot indulge our anxieties about whether this country will elect someone like Kamala instead of doing everything we can to get someone like Kamala elected."

She closed her speech with a call and response with the refrain "do something."

"It's up to us to remember what Kamala's mother told her: Don't just sit around and complain — do something," she said. "So if they lie about her, and they will, we've got to do something. If we see a bad poll, and we will, we've got to put down that phone and do something."

She continued: "So consider this to be your official ask: Michelle Obama is asking you — no, I'm telling y'all — to do something!"

Obama Didn't. No Way. Yes, He Did!

Former President Barack Obama sent the crowd at the Democratic National Convention into a fit of laughter when he made a not-so-subtle penis joke at the expense of former President Donald Trump. It wasn't so much the words as it was Obama's hand gestures that removed any doubt as to what he was getting at.

Are You Optimistic About The Election?

From Fleabag:

Not only am I optimistic, I am fired up and excited as hell. I haven't felt the joy, the enthusiasm, or the optimism like this since 2008.

I almost — almost, not quite because we're all still recovering from the Trump traumas — want to believe that this feeling, shared by so many other people, represents a fever breaking in America, a rejection and repudiation of the people who did their best to lead us into a dystopian, fascist, nightmare.

We have a huge fight ahead of us. They aren't running a campaign as much as they are preparing for another coup, and we will have to turn out an incredible number of voters to account for all the places they have people in place to deny and contest when he loses.

Before the debate, I was concerned. After the debate, I was despondent.

But now, I am fired up and excited as hell. Kamala Harris is going to be an incredible president, and there's a good chance she pulls the House and Senate with her. If that happens, we get SCOTUS reform, Trump faces the music for his crimes without interference, (and maybe some of his co-conspirators go with him, Mark Meadows), and we push the demons Trump unleashed back into the darkness where they belong.

But it only happens when ALL OF US turn out to vote. It only happens when we get all of our friends and family to vote. It only happens when we volunteer, stay involved, and SHOW UP.

We can do this.

We have to do this.

We are not going back.

No Wonder Republicans Are Running Scared

Members of Gen Z are more likely to be LGBTQ+ than they are to identify as Republican or as white Christians, according to a new survey.

Previous data confirmed that Gen Z — comprised of those born between 1997 and 2012 — is both the most racially and ethnically diverse generation in United States history, as well as the generation with the highest percentage of LGBTQ+ members. They have also been shown to be the most progressive age group.

A new report from the Public Religion Research Institute further reveals Gen Z's political leaning, and their overall attitude towards religion. The survey questioned 6,014 participants, both Gen Z adults (ages 18–25) and Gen Z teens (13–17), highlighting how their identities and values "set [them] apart from older generations."

Twenty-eight percent of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+, compared to 16 percent of millennials, seven percent of Generation X, and four percent of baby boomers. As only 21 percent say they are Republicans, there are more members of the queer community in Gen Z than GOP members.

In comparison, approximately 36 percent of Gen Z adults identify as Democrats, aligning closely with 35 percent of millennials, 31 percent of Generation X, and 34 percent of baby boomers. Republicans only claim 21 percent of Gen Z and millennials, 28 percent of Generation X, and 32 percent of baby boomers.

"Clearly, Gen Z does not like to be labeled, and they're not necessarily wanting to hang their hat with a particular political party these days," PRRI CEOMelissa Deckman told Axios.

Gen Z adults are also less likely to identify as white Christians (27 percent) compared to baby boomers (54 percent), and more likely to identify as religiously unaffiliated (33 percent) than every generation except millennials (36 percent).

While this may not bode well for Republicans in future elections, the report also found that less Gen Z members of voting age are planning to participate in the 2024 presidential election (49 percent) than the 2020 election (57 percent). The survey noted this likely reflects disinterest in a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, as 58 percent of Gen Z adults agreed "we won't be able to solve the country's big problems until the older generation no longer holds power."

Harvard Law instructor an attorney Alejandra Caraballo wrote on Twitter/X that the demographic changes in the report rather signal a shift from "white Christian male hegemony," which institutions must now account for.

"It's over for white Christian male hegemony in the United States and time for an egalitarian and equitable society," she said. "This is a demographic tsunami heading for American politics. No amount of kvetching and pathetic whining by the white supremacists will change this."

Quote of the Day

History has its eye on us. President Biden's decision to end his campaign was as pure an act of patriotism as I have seen in my lifetime. It should also be a call to action to the rest of us to continue his fight for the soul of our nation. The next 15 weeks will be like nothing this country has ever experienced politically but have no doubt: this is a race Democrats can and must win. Elections are about the future. That's why I am excited about Vice President Kamala Harris. She represents a fresh start for American politics. She can offer a hopeful, unifying vision. She is talented, experienced and ready to be president. And I know she can defeat Donald Trump. As we saw in the 2022 midterms, abortion bans and attacks on democracy are galvanizing women voters like never before. With Ms. Harris at the top of the ticket leading the way, this movement may become an unstoppable wave." ~ Hillary Clinton

It's The Blatant Hypocrisy

And with the likes of Lauren Theater-Handjob* Bobert preaching that this should be nationwide? Are you saying honey that if there had been Ten Commandment posters in classrooms earlier it would've prevented your entire fucking family from having mugshots?

*Not that there's anything wrong with a theater-handjob, but there is a time and a proper venue for such things, and it's not at a public performance of Beetlejuice!
