What inspires You? – Music
Spirit animal? – I once claimed Polar Bear for the answer to this question.
Living or deceased, whom would you most want to have a drink with? – Barack Obama
A word you love or hate? – literally
What would you do for a career in your next life? – I would stick it out in architecture and not give up on it. Leaving the field is one of my biggest regrets in this life.

Do you collect anything? – Funko POP!

Morning Routine
Weekdays, I get up at (or usually a bit before) 6 and let the dogs out while I get their breakfast together. I let them back in and while they're eating, I pack my breakfast and lunch for the day. I sit down at the computer for a few minutes to check email and news, and then shower and dress. I'm usually out the door by 7. Weekends are similar, except that I don't have to pack breakfast or lunch. Sometimes I'll go ahead and eat breakfast while checking email and news, and then crawl back into bed for a couple more hours of sleep.

Appreciations

Hidden talent? – I can curl my tongue. Is that a talent?
If you could choose a superpower what would it be? – invisibility to eyes and all EM sensory apparatus…at will, of course
Greatest indulgence? – My vinyl habit. Once upon a time I said, "I'd never spend $40 on a record."
Favorite cuisine? – Mexican

A Meme

I come up with some really weird shit when I'm laying in bed, wide awake at 2 am and can't get back to sleep; shit that sounds amazing at the time but when I actually get around to putting it down for posterity the next day it doesn't seem quite as amazing as I'd thought it would. (This leads me to believe that perhaps I wasn't quite as awake as I thought I was.)

Case in point, this little meme. I don't know if it's really a meme if I'm only one doing it, but the idea came to me last night when my usually fool-proof method of forcing myself back to sleep—counting backward from some arbitrary high number—utterly failed me.

It works like this: starting from the current year, assign a few words, a phrase, or a picture that best describes that year to you and work backwards as far as you want.

Mine goes like this:

2016
Underemployed and overextended. Fear of a Cheeto planet.

2000
Foggy early morning, walking down Market Street on January 1st to go to work to make sure that our interconnected world hadn't blown up at midnight and thinking, "So this is what the year 2000 looks like. We were lied to."

1999
Realizing I'd become the very thing I swore I never would when I originally arrived in San Francisco in 1986: a jaded old queen living up on the hill.

The one on my left index finger resulted from attempting to use an X-acto blade incorrectly as an adult.

I'm now more convinced than ever that these things are written by pre-teen girls who own pink cell phones and whose rooms are decorated with stuffed unicorns.

Popozogolu!

1. What is your favorite movie of all time?
Personal Services, the fictional account of notorious English madam Cynthia Payne, who became the darling of the English press after several arrests in the mid 1980's.

2. How often do you watch this movie?
At least once a year.

3. What's your favorite line out of the whole movie?
(Listen here.) "If I'd known he'd been out there all that time I'd have asked him in for a cup of tea!"

4. Who's your favorite character from this movie?
Christine Painter, the main character.

5. What scene do you love the most?
Christine, Shirley, and Lionel, all dressed in gym slips (English schoolgirl uniforms), playing out Lionel's particular fantasy.

Shirley: "You're a lesbian, aren't you?"
Lionel: "Yes…yes, I am."
(long pause as they turn and look at Christine)
Christine: "Me too."
Shirley: "Polly Parrot!"

"Tell Me of Your Homeworld, Usul."

1. What is your favorite book of all time?
That's an easy one, especially for anyone who knows me. It's Frank Herbert's DUNE.

(A close second is Richard Bach's Illusions, but we'll save that for another time.)

2. How often do you read this book?
I make my way through the whole sequence of Herbert's original six books about once every five years or so.

3. What's your favorite quote from the whole book?
The Bene Gesserit Litany Against Fear:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

4. Who's your favorite character from this movie?
Paul Atreides, a.k.a. Muad'Dib.

5. What scene do you love the most?
Paul's first confrontation with the Reverend Mother Helen Gaius Mohaim.

6. Why is this your favorite book?
It's because it's the most intricately crafted, completely alien—yet human—universe I've ever encountered in fiction. Just learning the language was an effort the first few times I read it. And now I can't help wonder if Herbert himself was a bit prescient. If you substitute "oil" for "spice", "Iraq" for "Arrakis", and lastly "The United States" for "The Empire", the parallels are uncannily striking, not to mention disturbing—especially when considering the hubris of the racist right-wing and their belief in the "invincibility" of our military.
