The second floor was probably for a massive masters suite.
On the first floor plan for either house, The bedrooms are listed as bdrm 2 and bdrm 3. That leads me to believe the second story contains the bdrm 1(the master en suite) with private covered patio which can be seen in the exteriors, and probably a bdrm 4, another bath and a sitting area/rec room/media room.
I think you’re right. It didn’t even occur to me there was no master suite on the first floor.
