    Let me be frank.

    People at work are not your friends or family. They are colleagues.

    Yes, there are some you get along better with than others. It just makes coming to work a little easier.

    Some will throw you under the bus if it means getting ahead. Some will be the office gossip and tell on you about everything, including how you part your hair. Some will take credit for your work without batting an eye. Some will put mine fields in your way just to see how you dodge them. The list goes on.

    Keep your powder dry. Do your work with integrity. Mentor others. Help those up the ladder as you go first.

    All in all, this is work. And remember, most of all, HR is not your friend.

    Keep a diary off of the work computer. Document your work and things that may cause friction.

  2. Leaving a job voluntarily, leaving because the job was eliminated and leaving a job because you were fired will elicit different reactions from your friends and coworkers. I know.
