Am I The Only One Who Misses This?

Damn it! Another AI generated image that isn’t immediately obvious.

At first image this looks like a real photograph. But then I noticed something was off about the CDs in the racks. They weren’t square, nor were they in the long-box packaging that briefly flourished in the 90s to thwart shoplifting. Then I noticed the generic posters hanging over the racks and then the shopper’s feet in the foreground.

Here’s a real photo of the glory days:

  1. Two of my favorite haunts were: Tower Records at Bay and Columbus in San Francisco, and Footlight Records in Manhattan. Some of my C.Ds still have a ‘Footlight Records’ Sticker on the back with the price.

  2. Oh!! I forgot to mention that when I was in Germany, going to the gay clubs in Frankfurt and Wiesbaden- where I lived- I was introduced to 45s that were as big as albums. They would spin them in the clubs. Also, you could go to German record stores and listen to albums before you bought them. I thought that was cool.

  3. Oh, I miss it big time.

I loved buying albums and reading the inside jacket-liner notes. I would spend hours pouring over them.

I am old enough to remember when CDs started creeping in. I was stationed in Germany and went to an Army post where they had a huge music shop like the ones above. Albums for days. I remember asking my friend what those small round things were. He said they’re called CDs. There new. And then said albums are much better.

    I’ll walk myself out.
