I think the first hidden track – or ghost track – I ever listened to was Her Majesty, at the end of The Beatles' Abbey Road album, which I had thanks to my elder brothers. Sung by McCartney, it was not listed on the album's track list, although it appeared so on the following editions of the LP.
The Beatles are known for having pioneered a lot of things but, in this case, I think the lyrics by themselves explain why the title didn't appear on the back cover. I can even imagine their genius producer George Martin coming up with "OK, guys. Let's put it on the record, BUT we can not advertise it. Let's make it a secret bonus. If necessary we'll pretend it was just a last minute mistake…"
