Okay, But Why Are The Exterior Walls So Thick?

Was this a conscious design decision? I know in the past I’ve designed (desert houses) with extremely thick exterior walls for their insulating properties. Just curious as to what was going through the designer’s mind.

  1. Hi! 🙂
To my mind, this house could require those thick walls, because of the need for load-bearing walls.

The house is much bigger, that one could expect from seeing the photo of the front view.
The front view create the illusion of a coherent whole. On the plan, the rooms are somewhat 4 times bigger that expected, specially the living room and the room with the staircase. There are a lot of openings in this wall, because of the bow windows, because of the doors and because of the huge 8 feet windows that are everywhere.

I really don’t think that the temperature regulation was in the mind of the architect.
Because of all the openings and because of its hubristic dimensions.

  2. My first guess would indeed be for Insulation from the weather and/or Sound. Looking more closely at the Blueprints, (with my aging eyes), are they written in Russian? I can almost make out the printed words, but not quite. If this home is even near Russia, well..

  3. I can’t answer your question about the thick walls. But I have another question for you: If that downstairs bedroom is for guests, where is the shower or tub for them?
