How Long…

No, not that. Get your minds out of the gutter!

How long have you been visiting Voenix Rising? Are you an old-timer who’s been with me from the beginning (ca. 2005 or thereabouts)—including that horrific period when I lost my mind just after we moved to Denver and I wiped the previous ten years of posts—or are you fairly recent?

How did you find me initially?

  1. Gosh… it’s got to be close to twenty years now. I started following Boy Culture, Towleroad, Kennith 212, and JoeMyGod around the same time so I’m not sure who was first and who I found through who. Like some others have said, I came for the men and stayed for your personality, wit, and humor. Between your blog and Ben’s social media posts, you’ve become an important part of my daily routine. Keep fighting the good fight Mark!

  2. I’m not sure. I remember Denver, and I think perhaps before Denver. Our mutual love of our Minis is an added bonus. 🙂

  3. I’ve followed you for a few years now. I vaguely remember how I found your blog, it was either through seeing you on someone else’s blog list or just randomly finding you.
    I enjoy reading your blog.

  4. It’s been 3-4 years, maybe a bit longer. Back then I would put GOOD PERSONAL BLOGS in a search box, and found very few that weren’t selling something. Yours was (and still is) the gem.

Love the political perspectives, architecture, San Francisco memories, and the deeply personal details you share. I’m straight, but love the dick pix, so make of that whatever you will.

Maybe *somebody* does it better, but I haven’t found that blog and I’ve stopped looking.

  5. At least 10 years. I don’t know how I found your blog – probably from someone else’s blogroll. Thanks for the hard work. I read your blog literally every day.

  6. Not that long, really. Probably 7 or 8 years. Came for the men. Stayed for the commentary, the images (that certain sensibility), the heartfelt rants. I’m a little older than you, but not by much, and my experiences are much different than yours. Still, we have a lot in common and I’m glad to have you in my morning routine.

  7. Hi Mark,

I think somewhere between 10 or 11 years. Fuzzy memory.

I think the first time I contacted you was about how much I loved your photos of hairy armpits and uncut cock. Still love them all these years later.

Love the architecture info and photos.

    Music equipment then and now.

It’s just a good blog and I find myself checking in a few times a day to see if you have added new updates.

You dislike tRump and his minions as much as I do. Thank you free speech!

Music recommendations are always appreciated. In fact, just recently I was going to recommend for your listening pleasure Raye, Live at Royal Albert Hall. Give it a listen.

Most of all, I think you are a good guy. I wish you and Ben many years together.

Someday, I will write about my partner/husband of 43 years. It was a good run.

    Keep up the good fight.

    Hugs

  8. No idea. It’s been a long while. My current blog is 23 years old, and I didn’t follow blogs before then. When did you start?

    1. 2005-ish, I think. There were a couple iterations (on Blogger, for instance) before I settled on an independently hosted WordPress installation.

  9. Hi Mark
Checking your posts for (wild guess) 4 years. Found on the link in Fearsome Beard. Favorites-the architecture posts, your spot-on political commentary, the certain sensibility photos, and you might guess the rest from other replies.🤓
    Keep up the good rants!
    Scottish too

  10. I have been following you since about 2010. Was looking at another site that mentioned yours. So, I saved it in my BOYS XX folder along with several that I still follow.

  11. I do not recollect when I started reading this here blog-thingy of yours. It’s been ages. You, Rick, 212 Kenneth & JoeMyGod have been my daily reads for … years. A very warm “Thank you” to each of you. I’m glad to be here.

  12. Probably about three years or so. Found a link on Rick’s blog.

An interesting mix of things, including political orientations! Neat vintage audio stuff, too.

I like seeing the pictures of prior times and hearing of your experiences. I can relate to many of them. Your work is appreciated!

  13. I’ve been looking at your blog for about six years. I’ve always enjoyed it. I found your blog following a link in another blog, but I don’t remember which.

  14. I don’t know exactly how long, but not from the beginning. Maybe you commented on my blog first? During the this past year or so I will admit that I do check in but don’t read your long political posts, mainly because I’ve already read (skimmed) the news on JMG and because I am burnt and oversaturated with political commentary. That’s one of the reasons I have pretty much stopped writing my blog and I’m in the process of removing posts. Trying to “leave no trace”. I am not a techie either, so that pretty much leaves the mens and the memes. I am old and tired.

  15. A very very long time. I think I started following you, Joe.MyGod. & Towleroad about the same time around 2010, now only two of you remain.

  16. I have followed you for several years now—about two or three.
As with many of the blogs I read, I usually stumble upon them when someone mentions them. I take a look and decide whether it is something I’m interested in. If so, I add it to the folder on my upper toolbar and go down the list each day to see what’s new.

I love your site and the variety of things you post. I can tell you are a tech nerd. You and I grew up in a time when there was no internet or cell phones. I remember AOL and the dial-up sound. I always tell the story of a friend calling me to say his AOL bill was higher than his house payment. I asked him, “What the hell are you doing?”

Now, this was a guy who loved sex—all kinds of sex. It rarely interfered with his daily life, but he was always horny. He was the manager of a mid-sized hotel, and the encounters he would have were something else.

I remember getting my first computer while completing my undergraduate degree in Dallas, Texas. I had to go to the computer lab and pray there was a Windows computer available to type my term papers, not a Mac. I tried a Mac once for about an hour.

My friend down the street worked for Microsoft as a help desk person for businesses. I told him I needed to buy a computer, and after talking through my needs, he said, “Okay, let’s go.” We went down to Best Buy. I pushed the cart, and he loaded it up. We took everything home, and he set it all up. Then he ran home, grabbed all his Microsoft program disks, and installed them for me. It took forever. This was probably around 1992.

Now I have graduated from a desktop computer—one of those big machines you could set on the floor or on a desk with separate screens—to a simple laptop. The amount of storage we have now is amazing. I remember discs, both the big floppy ones and the smaller versions.

I remember my first cell phone was a Nokia flip phone. The only reason I bought one was because I was traveling. That was probably in the early 2000s. I could go on.

Love your blog. It has a great mix of men, food, current events, and other odds and ends. The only thing I don’t like—and I reached out to you about this before—is that I would love to see a ticker or number in the header of each post showing how many people have responded, so I could easily open it and read the comments. As it is now, I only open the comment section here and there to see if anyone has replied or to comment.

Thank you for your hard work in keeping us entertained.
    💙💙

  17. I don’t know how long I’ve been following your blog, maybe five years or so, but I find myself reloading multiple times each day in hopes of finding new posts.

I was doing a search for info on whether or not some quasi-famous person is gay and a link to your blog was one of the first that showed up. Don’t even remember the name of the person I looked for.

So often I’m reading one of your posts and think how you and I have similar life experiences. Whether it be events we remember or music we’ve loved, we have many common interests.

I’m still waiting for you to post a link to “Lovin’ is Really My Game” by Brainstorm. Please tell me the song brings back many fabulous memories of shaking your groove thing.

Thank (insert the name of your personal deity) I came across your blog and may you continue to share with us.
