…still the best rendition of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita score. Back in the late 90s my housemate Michael picked up Madonna’s interpretation and after one listen, shaking my head through the entire performance, I dragged him down to a music store at Stonestown Galleria and picked up Boris Midney’s version. “This is how Evita is done,” I told him.
Yes, even at my age, I’m still very much a disco dolly.

As a big fan of Boris Midney’s projects, notably Beautiful Bend, I knew that his treatment of Evita would be sublime and it was!! His interpretations of Buenos Aires and I’d Be Surprisingly Good For You are stellar! Of course the classic Argentina song was a moderate hit (Tango!) but it exposed this type of music to a very different crowd who normally wouldn’t be attracted to Broadway musicals. Rainbow High is fantastic, easily one of my big favorites from this album along with the original cast and film recordings!!

I picked this up in the early 90s at a Tower Records after looking at it for weeks. I had no idea if it was something that was performed on a stage or a joke. Imagine a disco-fied Evita! All I knew was, after seeing the stage show multiple times and disliking the 2-3 official releases (sorry, I just can’t stand LuPone’s shouty Evita), I broke down and bought it.
I still thought it was all a joke after a listen. But then it clicked; It’s all kinds of fun and campy. It not meant to be deep or serious. It grew to be one of my favorites as well.
