Here in Europe, reports on student proficiency—in math, science, reading, connecting concepts, reading comprehension, and so on—are plummeting year after year. Why bother solving a problem or writing a text when you have AI to do it for you… to do EVERYTHING for you? They are incapable of maintaining focus on a text longer than 400 words—for God’s sake!
…Although it seems that, before long, none of this will matter: AI experts, one after another, say it poses a very serious threat to humanity’s physical survival. The latest news I’ve heard is that one AI escaped the computer containing it, another hacked a company’s systems *on its own initiative—without authorization*—and a leading authority on AI design and programming (yet another one—how many is that now?) has just publicly declared that, if left unchecked, AI would physically destroy the human race within ten years…
Yeah, I’m not sold on it, either. We just rolled it out this week at work (Copilot) and part of the official messaging was that we might get assigned work where we were expected to use AI. Thankfully that won’t apply to me as an attorney, but half the inquiries in the town hall chat were how to turn the features off entirely, or at least minimize the intrusive “do you want assistance” Clippy-style messages. No thank you.
