Okay, this series of videos absolutely terrifies me — more than any big budget horror flick in memory. I still get chills down my spine even though I know what's coming.

Terrifying I don't know. Maybe it's more about staging things in order to wake their audience's inner fears (and quite poorly setting up them in #2).
A clue to where they found their inspiration from?
Games dating from the 90s an further on, such as Doom / Duke Nuke'Em / Unreal / Wolfenstein / Devil May Cry / Quake / Portal…
