Texas is already connected to Canada, via I-35. I-27 stops at Lubbock, TX on the south plains. Connection I-27 to I-10 and/or San Antonio (I-35) would make sense. As I-27 would also have to cross I-20 in the process. But I-35 would need to be widened south to the border, too.
BUT as soon as any new north-south Interstate to the southern border might get built, you can surely bet that it would be a new route for "drug smugglers and human trafficers" to use, Which would further strain the TX National Guard and Gov Abott's "Operation Lone Star" to combat such.
Cruz, by training and prior employment, is a trial lawyer. He knows how to talk to people to get what he wants. Even if it might be what the general electorate claims they do not want (in polls).
The fact that Beto got sooo close to beating him, should have been a wake-up call, but he went "back to the base" and stayed there. His replacement might be coming?
