Vice President JD Vance attacked the Rev. Adam Hamilton the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Kansas, because Hamilton’s Church of the Resurrection was one of dozens of sponsors of Kansas City PrideFest. Vance said Hamilton “proudly supported a drag group called Our Ladies of Perpetual Indulgence.” No organization by that name exists.
Vance called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence “the devil worshiping group that was saying special blessings before LA Dodgers games” and “an anti-Christian hate group.” The Sisters are a 47-year-old volunteer order of queer and trans nuns founded in San Francisco on Easter weekend 1979. They raise money for community nonprofits and produced Play Fair!, a 1982 pamphlet that was among the earliest AIDS-era prevention resources.
The Dodgers did not invite the Sisters to bless games. The Los Angeles chapter received a Community Hero Award before the June 16, 2023, Pride Night game, recognizing decades of charitable work.
Sister Roma, a prominent member of the founding San Francisco order, told The Advocate, “If he was talking about the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, our name isn’t the only thing the vice president got wrong,” and added: “We do not mock nuns, we are nuns.” Hamilton’s campaign said Resurrection fed more than 45,000 people, distributed nearly 60,000 children’s books and built affordable housing in 2025.
